A Gold Pectoral (Marangga)

West Sumba, 18 19th Century

Gold Alloy

“ This archaic and elegant form – first seen in small pre-classical gold pieces found in Java and dating from the 4- 6th Century-would achieve its supreme form and size in West Sumba in the 18th and 19th Centuries. Marangga can reach widths of over 30cm and weigh up to 1 Kg. Photos from the 1930’s show the proud nobility of the village of Anakalang displaying scores of pieces hung out on bamboo poles,”

Only worn during great ceremonies.
